Candida Infection Overview

Candidiasis, also known as a Candida infection, occurs due to an overgrowth of Candida species, especially Candida albicans, a type of fungus. Candida typically resides in different parts of the body such as the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, and vaginal area without causing harm. However, specific conditions can provoke a Candida infection.

What are the symptoms of candidiasis?

  • Red, rash-like skin area with small, raised bumps (pustules).
  • Sensation of itching.
  • Feeling of burning discomfort.
  • Vaginal discharge that may appear white or yellow.
  • White patches or painful mouth sores affecting taste or causing discomfort while eating or swallowing.
  • Swelling caused by inflammation.

Types of Candida

Candida albicans (CA): CA is the most common Candida species and can cause a variety of infections such as oral thrush, vaginal yeast infections, and candidemia (bloodstream infection). Its ability to infect various parts of the body has led to extensive research.

Candida glabrata (CG): CG has become increasingly prevalent and is known for causing challenging infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. It often shows resistance to specific antifungal drugs, complicating treatment efforts.

Candida lusitaniae (CL): CL is a rare species naturally resistant to amphotericin B, a widely prescribed antifungal medication for severe fungal infections. It can potentially cause invasive infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems, although CL infections are less common compared to other Candida species.

Candida parapsilosis (CP): CP is a significant cause of invasive candidiasis, notably affecting newborns and individuals with medical devices such as catheters or prosthetics. Its strong adhesion to surfaces increases the risk of infections related to medical procedures.

Candida tropicalis (CTp): CTp is another prevalent Candida species capable of causing candidemia and diverse infections, similar to CA. It is commonly associated with bloodstream infections and can affect individuals both with weakened immune systems and those without.

Candida dubliniensis (CD): CD, closely related to CA, causes comparable infections such as oral and vaginal infections. Identified as a distinct species in 1995, CD is generally considered less virulent compared to CA.

Candida krusei (CK): CK is a less frequently encountered species capable of causing bloodstream infections and other invasive infections. It exhibits inherent resistance to fluconazole, a widely used antifungal medication, which complicates treatment strategies. CK infections are often associated with prolonged fluconazole therapy or compromised immune function.
