Candida Infection (Candidiasis) - What You Need To Know

Candida infection, also known as Candidiasis, It is a fungal infection resulting from an overabundance of Candida species, primarily Candida albicans. Candida is a type of yeast that usually resides in many body parts, such as the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, and vaginal area, without causing any harm. However, under some circumstances, Candida can cause an infection.

Candidiasis can affect different parts of the body, resulting in many types of infections:

1. Oral Candidiasis (Oral Thrush)

Oral Candidiasis is a fungal infection that affects the oral cavity, including the tongue, inner cheeks, mouth roof, and throat's back. It is caused by an overgrowth of the Candida fungus, primarily Candida albicans.

Candida is a normal inhabitant of the mouth, but certain factors can lead to its overgrowth, resulting in an infection. It is common in immunocompromised, elderly, and infants, especially those with weakened immune systems. The symptoms include white or yellow patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, and throat. The lesion occurs along with pain and discomfort. If the infection spreads to the oesophagal, it's called Esophageal Candidiasis, and the symptoms are pain and difficulty swallowing.

Symptoms of Oral Candidiasis:

  • White or yellowish patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth and throat.
  • Redness and soreness in the affected oral cavity areas.
  • Difficulty swallowing or discomfort while eating.

Testing/Diagnosis of Oral Candidiasis:

Oral Candidiasis is diagnosed based on clinical examination. Sometimes, a healthcare provider might take a Swab/Culture/Microscope of the affected area to confirm the Candida infection.

Treatment for Oral Candidiasis

Treatment of oral Candidiasis generally involves antifungal medications;

  • Topical Antifungals: To apply directly to the affected areas in the oral cavity.
  • Systemic Antifungals: Oral antifungal medications may be prescribed in more severe cases or cases resistant to topical treatment.

2. Vaginal Candidiasis (vaginal yeast infection)

Vaginal Candidiasis is commonly known as a vaginal yeast infection. Vaginal Candidiasis is caused by an overgrowth of the Candida fungus, predominantly Candida albicans.

Candida is a part of the normal resident vaginal microbiota. Still, under certain factors, it can lead to an imbalance that promotes excessive growth, resulting in an infection called Vaginal Candidiasis.

Symptoms of Vaginal Candidiasis:

Vaginal Candidiasis can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Vaginal Itching and Irritation: Itching and discomfort in the vaginal area.
  • Vaginal Discharge: A thick, white discharge may be present.
  • Burning Sensation: Discomfort or burning during urination or sexual intercourse.
  • Redness and Swelling of the vulva and vaginal tissues.

Testing/Diagnosis of Vaginal Candidiasis:

Diagnosing vaginal Candidiasis is a combination of clinical examination and laboratory tests (Swab test, Culture, Microscopic)

Treatment for Vaginal Candidiasis :

Treatment of vaginal Candidiasis involves antifungal medications:

  • Antifungal Creams.
  • Antifungal tablet for vaginal insertion.
  • Oral Antifungal Medications (in severe or recurrent infection)

3. Cutaneous Candidiasis

Cutaneous Candidiasis is a common fungal infection of the skin caused by the overgrowth of the Candida species. Cutaneous Candidiasis occurs when Candida yeast, primarily Candida albicans, abnormally proliferates on the skin. While Candida is a typical skin inhabitant, imbalances in the skin's ecosystem can lead to an overgrowth, resulting in an infection.

Cutaneous Candidiasis Causes:

  1. Warm and Moist Environments: Candida thrives in warm, moist areas of the skin. Skin folds, groins, and armpits are particularly susceptible.
  2. Weakened Immune System: People with compromised immune systems, such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or immunosuppressive treatments, are more prone to candida skin infections.
  3. Humidity and Sweating: Excessive sweating, often associated with humid weather or physical activity, can create an environment that promotes fungal growth.

Symptoms of Cutaneous Candidiasis:

Symptoms of cutaneous Candidiasis can vary depending on the specific location of the infection:

  • Redness and Rash
  • Itching and Irritation
  • Maceration: The skin may become soft, wet, and white due to prolonged moisture exposure.
  • Satellite Lesions: Small, red satellite lesions might appear around the rash.

Testing/Diagnosis of Cutaneous Candidiasis:

Diagnosing cutaneous Candidiasis involves a combination of clinical examination and laboratory tests:

  • Clinical Evaluation: A healthcare provider examines the affected skin, considering its appearance, location, and symptoms.
  • Microscopic Examination: Observation under a microscope to identify the presence of Candida organisms.
  • Fungal Culture: In some instances, a sample of the affected skin can be cultured to determine the specific species of Candida.

Treatment for Cutaneous Candidiasis:

Cutaneous Candidiasis revolves around antifungal medications:

  1. Topical Antifungals: Over-the-counter or prescription antifungal creams. These are applied directly to the affected area.
  2. Oral Antifungal Medications: A healthcare provider might prescribe oral antifungal medications in severe or recurrent cases.

Risk factors for Candidiasis

Overall Risk factors for Candidiasis at all sites are included:

  1. Weakened Immune System: Individuals with immunocompromised such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, or those taking immunosuppressant medications are at the highest risk of Candida infection.

  2. Poor Hygiene: Not keeping skin clean and dry can contribute to Candida skin infection.

  3. Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can promote yeast overgrowth and lead to Candida infection.

  4. Obesity: The more skin folds in the body can create a moist area ideal for yeast infection.

  5. Antibiotics: Long-term or misused Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of natural microorganisms. As well as a Broad-spectrum antibiotic can also disrupt the natural vaginal flora, allowing Candida to overgrow and cause infection.

  6. Hormonal Changes (Female): Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as during pregnancy, menstruation, or while taking hormonal contraceptives, can create an environment that promotes fungal overgrowth and could be prone to Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

Prevention:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Control underlying health conditions, such as diabetes.
  • Manage underlying conditions that weaken the immune system, such as HIV/AIDS.
  • Use antibiotics only when necessary and as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Minimize the use of Antibiotics that can contribute to fungal growth.
  • Balance your diet, avoid excess carbohydrate intake and avoid excessive sugar intake.
  • Avoid tight-fitting/clothing.
  • Keep skin folds and prone areas clean and dry.

If you suspect a Candida infection, please consult a healthcare professional for proper medication treatment.
