What is Ricovir-Em Used For?

HIV Treatment: Ricovir-EM is used as part of a combination antiretroviral therapy to manage HIV-1 infection.​

HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): It can be prescribed to HIV-negative individuals at high risk to reduce the likelihood of acquiring HIV. However, it should not be used if the person is already HIV-positive or if their HIV status is unknown. Regular HIV testing is essential during PrEP use.

• Adults: One tablet daily, preferably with food to enhance absorption.​
• Administration: Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew or crush.

While many people tolerate Ricovir-EM well, some may experience side effects, including:​

• Common: Headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, flatulence, and abdominal pain.​
• Serious: Lactic acidosis, liver enlargement with fat accumulation (hepatomegaly with steatosis), kidney issues (including nephritis and renal failure), bone density loss, and fat redistribution. 

Regular monitoring of renal function, liver enzymes, and bone mineral density is recommended during treatment.

Contraindications & Precautions

• Not recommended for: Individuals with known hypersensitivity to tenofovir, emtricitabine, or any component of the formulation.​
• Use with caution: Those with existing kidney or liver conditions, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals over 65 years old.​
• Drug interactions: Avoid concurrent use with other medications containing tenofovir, emtricitabine, or lamivudine.
