Types of HIV Tests Available in Thailand

3rd Generation Rapid HIV Test

This rapid test can provide results in just 15–30 minutes. It detects HIV antibodies, which are enzymes your body produces in response to the virus. The sample for this test is collected through a finger prick or blood sample. It’s ideal for quick screenings, as it’s one of the fastest and easiest options for HIV testing. However, the 3rd generation rapid test requires a long window period of 90 days (3 months) after exposure.

4th Generation HIV Test (Combo Test)

The 4th generation HIV test, also known as a combo test, detects two things that can indicate the presence of HIV. Unlike the 3rd generation tests that look for HIV antibodies, the 4th generation tests detect both HIV antibodies and HIV antigen, which enhances the test’s accuracy. The 4th generation tests have a shorter window period of 14–28 days.

HIV PCR Test

The PCR test is the most sensitive type of HIV test, typically used for early detection after recent exposure. It has the shortest window period of the tests available, ranging from 10 to 14 days after potential exposure. This is achieved by the test looking for the virus itself rather than the body’s reaction to the infection. The PCR test is often used in higher-risk exposure situations.

PULSE Clinic provides all three types of HIV tests at all branches across Thailand, including Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket & Koh Samui.

How Long Does It Take to Get HIV Test Results?

Rapid HIV tests can provide results in as little as 15–30 minutes. Laboratory-based 4th generation tests may take a few hours to one day, while HIV PCR test results can sometimes take several days depending on the clinic and laboratory processing time.

PULSE Bangkok and PULSE Pattaya provide same-day results for HIV PCR tests. Please check with our staff at the clinic again for availability.

How Soon After Exposure Should You Get Tested for HIV?

The current HIV testing method are incredibly accurate, but not all tests are the same. For reliable HIV test results, wait a bit between exposure and testing, called the HIV testing window period. A test may show a negative result even if infected during this period. The window period varies by test type because the method it uses to detect HIV.

If you’re uncertain about which test to get, providing your doctor with an honest sexual history during your consultation will assist them in determining the most suitable test for your needs.

What Happens If Your HIV Test Is Positive?

If your test results indicate a positive result, you may require a confirmatory test, typically conducted by a PCR laboratory. We will guide you through the process of initiating HIV treatment promptly. Starting treatment early significantly improves your chances of recovering quickly from the infection, leading to a state known as undetectable sooner.

Modern HIV treatment is highly effective in treating HIV, particularly when initiated early. It can help you achieve HIV undetectable status, meaning that HIV cannot cause any harm to your body or be transmitted to your sexual partners. (U=U | Undetectable = Untransmittable).

Why Should You Get Tested for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis Virus?

Getting rapid tests for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis viruses is important for several reasons:

  • Early Detection: Rapid tests can identify infections early, which is crucial for effective treatment and management.
  • Prevalence of Syphilis in Thailand: While some STDs, like HIV, show a decline in new cases, the opposite is true for other common STDs, such as syphilis. According to a report, syphilis has become more prevalent in Thailand. Getting tested and treated is one of the keys to reducing the transmission rate.
  • Treatment Options: Early diagnosis allows for timely treatment, significantly improving health outcomes and reducing the risk of complications.
  • Preventing Transmission: Knowing your status helps prevent the spread of infections to others. If you’re positive, you can take steps to reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Peace of Mind: Testing can alleviate anxiety about your health and help you make informed decisions about your sexual health.
  • Access to Resources: If you test positive, you can access healthcare services, counseling, and support to manage your health effectively.
  • Routine Health Check: Regular testing is a part of responsible health management, especially if you have multiple partners or engage in higher-risk behaviors.

Overall, getting tested is a proactive step toward maintaining your health and the health of those around you.

Why is HIV Often Tested Together with Other STIs?

Doctors usually recommend testing for HIV along with other STIs, especially syphilis. Some STIs can cause sores and blisters in areas exposed to sexual activity, making it easier for HIV infection to occur. Knowing your status for other STIs not only helps you get the right treatment but also allows you to assess your risk of HIV transmission more effectively.

Testing for syphilis alongside HIV is common practice, as syphilis can be diagnosed using blood samples. Syphilis is also more likely to cause sores and blisters on your body, which can increase your susceptibility to other STIs.

Condoms Don't Have to Be The Only Protection You Have. Get Protected with Other Methods Today!

You might also want to consider some preventive methods to help reduce the risk of STD transmission, especially in people who already have a history of having an infection. For example, HIV PrEP is a highly effective method in HIV prevention, DoxyPEP for bacterial STI, or getting HPV vaccines for 100% protection against 9 dangerous strains of HPV.
