POZ&PROUD - HIV Treatment Service in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chaing Mai & Koh Samui (Thailand)

We aim to ensure everyone has the best chance of living a healthy life. If diagnosed with HIV, start treatment as soon as possible. Treatment keeps your immune system healthy and reduces the risk of HIV-related health conditions. It also lowers the viral load to undetectable levels, as shown by international studies PARTNER and Opposites Attract. HIV-positive men on treatment with an undetectable viral load (UVL) don’t transmit HIV to their partners.

In early HIV care, when treatments were limited, people with HIV and their doctors often delayed treatment until the CD4 count fell to around 200, weakening the immune system. At the time, this was considered the best moment to start treatment due to the known side effects of available treatments. However, ART treatments are now more effective, better tolerated, and offer more options, allowing individuals to find the best treatment for them.

What is Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a mix of medicines that fight HIV, a virus that wreaks havoc on CD4 cells, which are essential for our immune system. While ART can’t cure HIV, it does wonders in keeping the virus levels in check. This allows our bodies to make more CD4 cells and stay healthy.

ART medicines use different ways to stop HIV from sneaking into cells and making copies of itself. By combining two to four medicines, each working its magic, ART reduces the virus’s levels (called the viral load) in our bodies. This combo therapy is more effective and less likely to fail. If the viral load is low enough, blood tests might not even pick up HIV.

How Effective is Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) for Treating HIV?

ART is super effective when you take it consistently and correctly. Studies show that over 90% of people who follow their ART meds get HIV levels so low they can’t be detected within a year. If you start ART right away and keep taking it, you can live as long as someone without HIV. Without treatment, people with HIV usually live 8 to 10 years.

It’s important to know that ART doesn’t completely get rid of HIV from your body. Instead, it focuses on the viruses that are actively entering your cells and making more copies. When HIV is inside your cells and not making more copies, these medications can’t see it. ART can effectively stop HIV from reproducing, bringing its levels so low that blood tests can no longer detect it. But if you stop ART when you reach undetectable levels, the dormant virus can wake up and start making more copies again. This reactivation can make it harder to treat the virus if it happens.

When Should I Get HIV Treatment?

The most critical time to treat is right after diagnosis. You should get the treatment as soon as possible. The START study found that starting treatment early, even if it’s right away, can make a big difference in your health and life expectancy. It can even prevent serious illnesses like cancer, kidney, and liver disease by over half compared to those who wait to start treatment. And guess what? The study also showed that there’s no risk to your health if you start treatment right away.

When you first get HIV, your viral load is usually really high, which means you’re more likely to spread the virus to others. And guess who’s more likely to spread HIV without knowing they have it? People who are newly infected, often right after they’ve been bitten. So, if you’ve been diagnosed with HIV, starting treatment early is not only good for you, but it’s also good for your partners. It’s a win-win situation!

Newly Diagnosed Positive Individuals to Treat Early to End HIV

We’re committed to ending HIV by 2030, and by treating early, you are looking after your health as well as helping to prevent HIV transmission.

If you have been recently diagnosed with HIV, feel free to get in touch with us. PULSE’s service for newly diagnosed gives you access to experienced doctors and well-trained counsellors, usually within one working day.

How Long Do You Need to Stay on Antiretroviral Therapy?

You’ll need to take antiretroviral medications for life. Regularly missing doses can cause the virus to multiply and become harder to treat. Studies show that missed doses of ART increase the risk of lower T-cell counts and higher viral load, which would mean the HIV virus will start replicating itself in your system, then get dangerous to your health again, medication resistance, which would require stronger medication in order to stay at the previous undetectable level, and life-threatening infections that come from a weaker immune system.

HIV treatments nowadays are much less intimidating, usually only involve taking one pill per day and going to schedule check-up once in a while.  Talk to your doctor if you are worried about the lifelong treatment or feeling like you want to stop the medicine.

POZ & PROUD, HIV Treatment at PULSE

POZ & PROUD is a program including bi-annual lab tests and vaccination for people living with HIV by PULSE Clinic. It’s important to start your treatment as early as possible as it keeps your immune system healthy and reduces the risk of developing health conditions associated with HIV.

Rapid HIV Blood Test at PULSE

PULSE Clinic offers 2 options for rapid HIV blood tests:

Option 1: HIV Combo The Rapid HIV test at PULSE clinic is a combination antigen & antibody 4th generation finger prick blood test. The test is simple and quick, giving accurate results in only 20 minutes. Our rapid combo test detects more acute HIV infections than that of previous 2nd & 3rd generation tests available. This new rapid blood test identifies HIV-positive patients earlier within a smaller window period, helping to prevent further transmission during this extremely infectious early stage. This HIV test can be taken 2 weeks after exposure to the HIV and is taken in a completely confidential and discrete environment at all our branches throughout Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Malaysia.

Option 2: 3rd generation Rapid HIV Test This Rapid HIV test at PULSE clinic is an HIV antibody test (also called third-generation test). An HIV antibody test looks for these antibodies in your blood, oral fluid, or urine. If these antibodies are found, it means that your body is reacting to an HIV infection and that you have HIV. 3rd generation antibody tests have a window period of approximately three to four weeks.

Prevent Other Complications with HPV Vaccine

People with weakened immune systems (including individuals with HIV/AIDS) may be less able to fight off HPV and more likely to develop health problems from it.

HPV vaccine should be taken as soon as possible. In October 2016 ACIP recommended HPV vaccine dosage according to age starting the first dose.

  • Age less than 15 years old: 2-dose regimen (day 1 and month 6)
  • Age above 15 years old: 3-dose regimen (day 1, months 1-2, month 6)
  • Immunocompromised people such as HIV-infected patients: 3-dose regimen (day 1, month 1-2, month 6) regardless of age.

Frequently Asked Questions About Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

HIV treatment, called antiretroviral therapy (ART), uses prescribed medications to lower the HIV virus to undetectable levels, making it untraceable by standard tests. With this type of treatment, ART helped people living with HIV start a family and enjoy a happy, healthy life.

Starting ART is crucial for everyone with HIV, regardless of how long they've had the virus or their health status. Delaying treatment can damage the immune system and increase the risk of transmission, illness, and AIDS.

What is U=U?

You might have heard the phrase 'Undetectable = Untransmittable'. Most people living with HIV who follow a daily antiretroviral therapy regimen can achieve an undetectable viral load within six months.

When someone with HIV is undetectable and maintains this status for at least six months, the risk of sexual transmission is effectively zero. This is estimated to be 100% effective as long as they continue taking their prescribed medication. At PULSE Clinic, we perform regular blood tests to monitor your progress and determine when your virus is undetectable and untransmittable.

How Often Do You Take HIV Medication?

People newly diagnosed with HIV typically take between 1 and 4 pills daily. The specific combination of HIV medicines is tailored to each individual.

Treatment effectiveness is monitored by measuring the viral load; an undetectable viral load means the virus cannot be measured. Most people on daily HIV treatment achieve an undetectable viral load within 6 months.

What Happens If You Stop Taking HIV Medication?

If you stop taking your HIV medication, your viral load will quickly increase. It’s important to continue taking your HIV medicine as prescribed, even if your viral load is undetectable.

If you’re considering stopping your medication or have concerns about your treatment, consult your doctor. If you’ve already stopped, reach out to your health care provider immediately. They can help address any issues that led to discontinuation and assist you in resuming your medication regimen.

Are There Any Side Effects from HIV Medications?

While on HIV medication, you might experience symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue

We know that side effects like nausea or diarrhea can make it challenging to stick with HIV treatment. Your healthcare provider can offer medications or other support to help manage most side effects.

If your HIV treatment is causing significant discomfort, discuss it with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional medications to alleviate the side effects or adjust your treatment plan.
