What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery, is a highly effective treatment that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and remove various benign skin lesions.

At our clinic, we offer cryotherapy for:

  • Removal of actinic keratosis
  • Removal of seborrheic keratosis
  • Removal of skin tags
  • Removal of common viral warts on the hands, arms, body, and feet
  • Removal of genital, anal, penile, and vulvar warts
  • Removal of molluscum contagiosum
  • Removal of dermatofibromas

What are the Benefits and Side Effects of Cryotherapy?

Benefits of cryotherapy include a quick preparation time, the ability to perform the procedure immediately, minimal invasiveness, little to no bleeding, a low risk of infection, minimal wound care, no need for injectable anesthesia in most cases, and no sutures required.

Side effects may include blistering and hypopigmentation, although scarring is rare.

Most skin lesions can be treated in a single session, though some may require 2 or 3 sessions for optimal results.

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

Liquid nitrogen is the most effective cryogen used in clinical treatments.

It reaches extremely low sub-zero temperatures, completely destroying the targeted lesions. The extent of the damage depends on how quickly the tissue cools and the minimum temperature reached. Within 24 hours after treatment, inflammation occurs, further aiding in the destruction of the lesion through immune system-mediated processes.

The amount of liquid nitrogen used and the method of application is determined by factors such as the size, tissue type, depth of the lesion, its location on the body, and the required freezing depth.

How Long Does Each Treatment Session Take?

Each treatment session is quick and straightforward, typically lasting between 15 to 30 minutes.

How Long Does It Take for the Skin to Heal?

Following treatment, the lesions will usually dry up and fall off within a week, with the skin taking an additional week to heal and dry completely.

What Precautions Should Be Taken?

After treatment, apply the prescribed antibiotic cream, and gently clean the area. Avoid scratching, rubbing, or irritating the treated area.

As the skin heals and a scab forms, do not scratch or peel it off. Allow the scab to naturally fall off or wait until the underlying skin has fully healed and dried.
