DESCOVY for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily prescription medication intended for adults and adolescents at risk of contracting HIV, designed to lower the chances of HIV transmission through sexual activity.

Important Considerations:

DESCOVY for PrEP is not appropriate for everyone. It is not recommended for individuals assigned female at birth who are at risk of acquiring HIV through vaginal sex, as its effectiveness for this group has not been studied. Emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (FTC/TAF)

TAF delivers higher levels of tenofovir to cells more quickly and sustains those levels longer, making it potentially more effective for people who sometimes miss doses.

In the DISCOVER study, F/TAF showed similar effectiveness to F/TDF for PrEP, with fewer HIV infections in the F/TAF group (6 infections) compared to F/TDF (11 infections), though the difference wasn't statistically significant. As of January 2021, there’s no evidence to suggest that Descovy is more effective than Truvada in preventing HIV.

TAF also has fewer issues with kidney function and bone density compared to TDF. Both Descovy and Truvada are recommended as first-line HIV treatments and are also approved for treating hepatitis B.

Since the approval of Truvada in 2012, Descovy was approved as a new PrEP option on October 3, 2019, for HIV-negative individuals at risk of HIV through sexual contact.

Standard Dose

Take one tablet once daily, with or without food. Each tablet contains 200 mg of emtricitabine and 25 mg of tenofovir alafenamide.

This medication is for adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds (25 kg). Do not crush or split the tablets, as it has a bitter taste, even though TAF dissolves in water.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. In that case, take the next dose as scheduled. Do not take two doses at once. Descovy should not be used if your creatinine clearance (CrCl) is below 30 mL/min or if you are on dialysis. For children under 77 pounds, combining Descovy with a boosted HIV protease inhibitor is not recommended.

Descovy was approved for HIV prevention (PrEP) in October 2019.

Descovy includes emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), which has fewer kidney and bone side effects compared to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). Both Descovy and Truvada are recommended first-line HIV treatments and are also approved for hepatitis B.

Do not combine Descovy with other antivirals unless prescribed by your doctor. Some single-tablet regimens (STRs) already contain TAF, and drug interactions may occur. Always inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter products.

Before and During Treatment

Ensure HIV-Negative Status:

• Confirm you are HIV-negative before starting DESCOVY, and continue to verify your status through HIV tests immediately before starting and at least every three months during treatment.
• Notify your healthcare provider immediately if you suspect HIV exposure. Many tests may not detect a recent HIV infection.

Report Flu-Like Symptoms:

Inform your healthcare provider if you’ve experienced flu-like symptoms in the month leading up to or while taking DESCOVY.

Preventing Other STIs

DESCOVY helps reduce the risk of HIV but does not protect against other STIs. To lower your risk:

• Use latex or polyurethane condoms with lubricant.
• Talk to your partner(s) about their HIV and STI status and testing history.
• Get regular HIV and STI tests.
• Talk to a healthcare provider for more ways to reduce STI risks.

Serious Side Effects

Hepatitis B (HBV) Worsening: Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV before starting DESCOVY. If you have HBV, stopping DESCOVY without medical advice could cause a sudden worsening of your condition. Always consult your healthcare provider before stopping treatment, as they may need to monitor your health or prescribe medication for HBV.
