Overview

This test is used for diagnosing and managing patients suspected of having irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) symptoms related to bile acid malabsorption (BAM). Bile acids, crucial for fat absorption, can lead to diarrhea when not properly absorbed in the colon due to BAM. IBS-D, characterized by various gastrointestinal symptoms, often involves accelerated colonic transit time, with a significant proportion attributed to BAM. While methods for detecting BAM are limited, quantifying fecal bile acids can aid in screening for IBS-D and identifying candidates for bile acid sequestrant therapy, which may alleviate symptoms.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

  • Assistance in assessing individuals with suspected symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) caused by a deficiency in absorbing bile acids.
