What is Testicular Pain?

Males at any age can go through testicular pain. Testicles are small organs used for reproduction, and they rest inside the scrotum, which is a thin pouch of skin behind the penis. If you are experiencing testicular pain, you may feel the pain in just one or both testicles. Even though the pain feels like it comes from the testicles, its source might be another part of your body. For example, your stomach or groin. This is called referred pain - Referred pain, also called reflective pain, is pain perceived at a location other than the site of the painful stimulus.

Testicular pain can develop suddenly and last a short time or gradually and last a long time. This is because the testicles contain numerous sensitive nerves that can intensify the pain.

If the pain lasts more than an hour, you should seek immediate medical attention from your nearest healthcare provider. Severe pain could indicate a testicular torsion, a serious medical emergency that requires prompt evaluation, potentially in an Emergency Room (ER).

Is it Normal to have Testicular Pain?

Not at all. It is not normal to have testicular pain.

Testicles are sensitive organs, and any trauma or impact caused can lead to temporary pain. As mentioned above, if you are experiencing pain for more than an hour, you can contact medical professionals or us.

Top 5 Common Testicular Pain Causes

Injury

Injuries can happen anywhere. It can happen during your sports day, or a fall or other accidents. Your solution is resting, icing your testicle areas, and taking pain medications to help relieve the pain.

Epididymal Inflammation

Testicular pain results from inflammation of the epididymis. Swelling of the tube and related tissue can lead to discomfort and swelling in the testicles. Epididymitis can occur due to a bacterial infection or an STD.

Epididymitis is typically caused by a bacterial infection, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea or chlamydia. Occasionally, the inflammation can extend to a testicle, leading to a condition known as epididymal orchitis.

Inguinal Hernia

An inguinal hernia happens when part of the intestine bulges through a weak spot in the belly near the groin. Surgery is often needed quickly to fix it because these hernias are common and require treatment.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

STD infections can cause your testicles to swell or inflame. The sign is when you feel a burning feeling. Here are some possible sexually transmitted diseases you may have caught:

Usually, testicular cancer shows up as a painless lump. If there is pain, it is usually a dull ache or discomfort. However, testicular cancer is rare and quite treatable when it is caught early. Learn more on "How to do a self-examination for Testicular Cancer".

Preventing Testicular Pain

It is essential to know that not all cases of testicular pain can be prevented, but there are ways to help decrease the chance of creating pain.

  • Prevent injuries to your testicles from happening by wearing an athletic supporter
  • Using a condom during sexual intercourse & practicing safe sex
  • Check your testicles’ health monthly to note changes or lumps
